Format guide
How to play Ambrose and Texas scramble
Teams play the best shot every time, so everyone contributes and nobody is left out.
Scramble
Every player on the team tees off, the team chooses the best shot, and everyone plays their next shot from that spot. It repeats until the ball is holed, and the team records one score.
Ambrose
The same idea with net scoring, using a team handicap. Organisers set the team handicap, often a fraction of the players’ combined handicaps. It’s a favourite at Australian club days.
Texas and Florida scramble
- Texas scramble: each player’s tee shot must be used a set minimum number of times (often four or six over the round), so the best player can’t carry the team.
- Florida scramble: the player whose shot is chosen sits out the next shot.
- Names for these formats vary between clubs, so check the local rules.
Tips
- Pick the shot order carefully and put your best putter last.
- Agree drive-use rules and handicap allowances before you start.
- Groups vary the rules, so agree the details on the first tee.
