Format guide
How to run a Ryder Cup-style golf trip
Two teams, three days, one scoreboard.
How it works
Split the group into two teams, for example 10 v 10 for a 20-player trip. A captain for each team picks players in a draft, or you make balanced or random teams. Over the trip, the teams play sessions of:
- Foursomes: pairs play alternate shot.
- Four-ball: pairs each play their own ball and the better score counts.
- Singles: one against one.
Scoring
Every match is match play. A win scores a point for the team and a halved match scores half a point. The team with the most points wins the cup. Many groups run an individual competition, like a Green Jacket on net score, alongside it.
Tips
- Agree the format, the number of sessions and the handicap allowance beforehand.
- Hold a live draft night for the build-up.
- Have the captains reveal pairings together, so nobody can adjust at the last minute.
- Add a daily award and a rain plan.
